Take-Two Interactive don’t want you playing the GTA 6 map yet, it seems

Following a YouTube copyright strike, the GTA 6 map modder Dark Space has taken down their GTA 5 mod to avoid further legal action.

Take-Two Interactive don’t want you playing the GTA 6 map yet, it seems

Until today, you could play a rough approximation of the GTA 6 map within Grand Theft Auto V thanks a certain GTA 5 modder. Unfortunately, it seems Take-Two Interactive weren’t very happy about this, issuing a copyright strike against the modder on YouTube, leading to the mod’s removal entirely.

As of writing, the actual shape of the GTA 6 map is largely a mystery, with only a few GTA 6 leaks and fan projects giving us an idea of the map’s overall shape (that being a revisit to Vice City, and an expansion on the surrounding areas). The GTA 6 trailer from December 2023 also gave us numerous glimpses of the map’s diversity, showing everything from lush swamps to sprawling cityscapes. Despite this, we are still nowhere near a complete, detailed map, but that hasn’t stopped fans from trying their best at creating one.

Unfortunately, it seems one such creator flew too close to the sun, with two month’s worth of work being wiped out by a copyright strike on their YouTube video. The video in question demonstrated what GTA 5 modder Dark Space had accomplished, namely the integration of a fanmade GTA 6 map into the world of GTA 5.

On Twitter, the modder stated, “Take Two interactive has copyright claimed and removed my video on the GTA 6 map I made in GTA 5. I expected something like this could happen. I am surprised they didn’t bother emailing me. I would have taken it down if asked.”

In response to the copyright strike, Dark Space decided to remove access to their Project Vice map mod just four days after it was released.

Dark Space also released a full response video to the copyright strike, wondering if their version of the map was “a little too accurate” that Take-Two Interactive must have “felt some sort of threat from it.”

Whether this is true or not is irrelevant as there is no way to verify if the map is particularly accurate to what will be in the game come Fall 2025. However, Dark Space did go on to question if the sudden reaction from Take-Two Interactive was a bit extreme. Speaking on the wider GTA 5 modding community and the GTA 5 community as a whole, Dark Space noted they have “helped hype a game that Rockstar has barely revealed. They should be thanking fans, not punishing them.”

“Stuff like this makes me wonder why any of us work on these games.”

Whatever the reason behind Take-Two Interactive’s copyright strike, the fact remains that anything that could constitute a GTA 6 leak is a hot issue for the publisher, and the GTA 6 release date remains a bitterly distant reality.
